When I was a little girl, in the early sixties, my mom used to sit me in a corner with a pair of scissors and a stack of magazines. I remember this image because I thought it was so beautiful, with all the deep greeny blues. I especially admired the confidence on the woman's face and how she was looking off into the horizon as if she had a head full of well-defined plans and five years in which to accomplish them. I thought the only flaw in the photograph was the man simpering at her breast. So I took my scissors and snipped him out. Voila! Problem solved!

I love men, but I was right. This guy doesn't belong in this picture.

Gary McCullough, the director of ChristianNewsWire, posted an opinion piece on the upcoming demise of the television show American Idol. He blames it all on Ellen DeGeneres who will be replacing Paula Abdul as judge. McCullough claims DeGeneres is , "...more known for her same-sex sexual preference than any expertise in the music business." On the other hand, when you think of Paula Abdul your first thoughts are of wholesomeness and family values?

He goes on to imply that adding DeGeneres as a judge "...is one more step in making sexuality the prime topic when discussing American Idol."

Just because the word "sex" is part of the word "homosexual," the same as it is with "heterosexual," doesn't mean that homosexuality is all about sex, any more than heterosexuality is all about sex. Ellen DeGeneres is a lovely person in a stable, loving relationship. To imagine her sexually as McCullough suggests will happen, takes a lascivious mind, straying from its own professed inclinations.

Christians, let's bring discussions of faith back above the waist. Take your noses out from under other people's bedding and get a breath of fresh air.

Over at Debbie's Cakes is a very special Christmas cake she designed. In her own words,

Happy Birthday Jesus

I was ask to do a baby Jesus birthday cake. The design was up to me. My husband came up the the crown of thorns idea. To make the crown, I weaved rolls of fondant around a ring of rolled up of wax paper. Then before the fondant dried, I cut the crown into two sections. This allowed for easy removal of the paper without breaking the crown into pieces. After the fondant dried (several days), I "welded" (with royal icing) the rolls together in various places to keep them together when the paper was removed. Then after that dried, I removed the wax paper.

The thorns are made with royal icing and also attached with royal icing. The tips of the thorns are dabbed with red royal icing. The cake is red velvet with cream cheese icing.

Red velvet - signifying the oh-so-yummy blood of the lamb. Happy birthday, Jesus, indeed!

Other scenes illustrate the dangers of sex education and sensitivity training (10.11), debauchery (12:30), Batman hubcaps (14:00), bullet throwing (18:21), work camps (21:00), bad beards (30:35), assault (32:00), christianity is stupid (34:00), lascivious lip licking (41:21), and Pirkle translating a grandmother's ramblings from beyond the grave (47:20).

Cheap special effects abound, beheadings (44:32), chopsticks in ears (23:40), and drunken communist menacings (24:50).

The man who killed Dr. George Tiller yesterday at his church, as Tiller handed out bulletins to those entering... The man who killed Dr. George Tiller yesterday is the deed to the thought of O'Reilly, Hannity, Beck, Tony Perkins, Donald Wildmon, James Dobson and all their impotent little wannabes.

This happened in Tiller's church - a Reformation Lutheran church, a "welcoming" church, code for accepting LGBT.

Dr. George Tiller was one of a few doctors offering late-term abortions in the United States. He was known to wear a button that read "Trust Women."

The shooting yesterday reminds me of the gunman who entered the Unitarian church last July killing two and wounding seven. The church, according to the gunman, was a liberal church.

There's no freedom of religion in the U.S., according to the Bible bangers. Either you believe like they do or you're fair game. That's not religion. That's a cult. No, it's not a cult, it's terrorism, and the suspect should be treated as an enemy combatant.

Anti-gay Thought and Children

One of the worst things about the anti-gay movement is the sexualizing of human beings, and especially of children. Heterosexuality is accepted as the norm, homosexuality as a sexual perversion. The "sexual" in "homosexual" is emphasized, understood as activity, whereas in "heterosexual" it's the "hetero" that is emphasized and the "sexual" is waived. Heterosexual children are not viewed by default as sexual beings.

When a person, or a child, comes out as homosexual they are automatically categorized, by those infected with anti-gay thought, as a person characterized by sexual activity. They are viewed in a lascivious light, as might someone working as a pole dancer or Catholic priest.

This is especially harmful with children. Viewing an LGBT child as someone who has crossed over into imagined sexual activity allows some adults to withdraw their respect and protection from that child. This is something I have become acutely aware of as my own 13-year-old son has come out at his middle school.

Many well meaning adults charged with my child's protection look at me through a fog of incomprehension, not understanding why they cannot allow children to be called "faggot" in their classroom, or why they have to report each and every incidence of violence. It's as if they were saying to me, "But your child is gay!"

My son does not have a boyfriend, nor does he want one. He is not there yet. He is a child. He understands that his desire is for his own gender, just as some little girls understand that when they grow up they want to marry someone just like daddy. Coming out as gay, for my son, was not an invitation to be treated like someone "asking for it".

The religious right and social conservatives are making a grave error that may cause the marginalization of their organizations for decades to come. Stripped of their political power and moral authority, all that's left, all the world sees, is the perversion of their ideas - LGBT children as sexualized beings rather than human beings, and the smallness, meanness and cruelty that they preach.

Viewing LGBT children as sexualized beings instead of human beings requires the willing (though perhaps unconcious) act of recategorizing a human being, or human child, as a sexual object. This places the child at risk of being abused by other children and adults for whom the usual social boundaries no longer apply.

If we are talking about sin, recategorizing a human child as a sexual object is a SIN.

April 17, 2009 is the National Day of Silence, which brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Most of the school children involved plan to remain quiet during the day, or even just between classes or during breaks - not exactly a disruptive protest.

Donald Wildmon, of the American Family Association of Tupelo, Mississippi, sees it differently. In his Action Alert he writes,

...call your local school and ascertain whether they officially or passively allow students to observe "Day of Silence."

In other words, will your child's school allow students to not talk throughout the day? Wildmon continues,

Schools do not have to tolerate students remaining silent in class.

Say what? How are you going to force students to talk in class?

The issue of anti-LGBT bullying came home to me this week. Last Tuesday my 13-year-old son, who is gay and out, received a verbal death threat from another student in his science class. The student's parents were called in twice and the student was suspended. The school did not, however, contact us until Friday morning.

This is one of those things that, when you hear it, is like getting slapped. As the school official was talking to me I was numb, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. But over the course of the day the enormity of the event began to sink in.

A hate email was sent to my son last night.

What the FUCK is going on? What kind of parents teach their children to threaten another child with death? Donald Wildmon's Christian parents? And MY child is involved in a what Wildmon calls a

...sinful, unnatural and destructive behavior[?]

What's more sinful, unnatural and destructive than a little Christian boy being taught to murder another boy?

It's more and more difficult for me to write about religion - about how wacky and weird these people are. They are not. They are dangerous and deluded and un-American. And the "good" Christians - those who profess God but also support gays and women - they create an atmosphere where the dangerous behavior of the Bible banging Christians can find purchase. Without the "good" Christians the rest would be left to twist in the wind - the danger of their thoughts and actions stripped bare for all to see and condemn.

More and more I am convinced that the only way to honor any god is to deny him/her. No God would countenance this hateful behavior and would prefer not to be worshipped at all to having his/her nature perverted as it is throughout the world today.

In an American Family Assocation Action Alert sent by Donald Wildmon of Tupelo, Mississippi, earlier this week PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) was labeled a homosexual group. I found this particularly interesting as probably only a small percentage of people belonging to PFLAG are homosexual. Donald Wildmon doesn't just condemn gay people but also those who love or support them. Just as in the Civil Rights era, it was not just blacks who were targeted for retribution, but also those who supported them. The colors may have changed somewhat, but the game remains the same. Go Mississippi!

Of course they have their own ripped off version of PFLAG called PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays). Wildmon tortures the logic,

The River Nile, by Kenny Blair is an pro-life mystery. The protagonist, Kansas writer Julie Benham, researches the Catholic orphanage from which she was adopted - which, coincidentally, is next door to an abortion clinic, and "her perfect world soon begins to unravel."

I really don't mind reading books that use clichés like "her perfect world soon begins to unravel." I'm a big Ed Wood fan and often read advance copies of Christian books enjoying their purple prose. I did not get an advance copy of this book, however, and refuse to pay $11.89 for a book I'll probably toss, so will have to limit my review to the publicity copy.

As the young woman digs for information, she realizes that the women's clinic [in Wichita, KS] is just a front for what really happens when mothers come to abort their third trimester babies. Mothers checking in are unaware that the clinic refuses to kill their babies, but instead removes their children alive and then transfers them to the Catholic orphanage that cares for and raises them.

In the USA preterm infants are born 28 - 56 days early. It costs an average of $2,000 a day to care for a preterm infant, which would make the average total cost of caring for these infants $56,000 - $112,000. The abortion clinic/neonatal intensive care unit would have to be quite flush with funds and would also have to arrange for birth certificates. Only the most desperate adoptive parents would agree to an adoption where the biological parents have not given up their parental rights.

The Amazon product description poses the question, "When is it okay to deceive those around you if it means saving lives?"

I've been reading about Ghandi lately and thinking about non-violence. Yesterday I learned that in 1913, in an effort to expel Indians from South Africa, the government invalidated Indian marriages, making Indian wives concubines and Indian children bastards. Ghandi wrote:

...Mr. Justice Searle of the Cape Supreme Court gave judgment on March 14, 1913 to the effect that all marriages were outside the pale of legal marriages in South Africa with the exception of such as were celebrated according to Christian rites and registered by the Registrar of Marriages.

Indian women protested first, by crossing borders without papers and selling wares without licences. When they were imprisoned thousands of Indian miners went on strike and joined the march.

How different is it today, when the state, motivated by delusions of purity, tries to prevent women from marrying the women they love, and men from marrying the men that they love? By doing so marriage is made - not the sacred love-based union of two hearts - but a cynical tool of the state wielded against those of whom they disapprove.

Can we move beyond the thinking that motivated South Africa in 1913?

They've got their fingers in their ears over at Associated Baptist Press, because a brown brother, Miguel De La Torre (if that is his real name), has suggested that Jesus may have struggled with racism, just like today's Christians.

Our faith tells us that anyone can come to Jesus. The evangelistic message is that Jesus will turn no one away. We can come just as we are, ill and diseased. All who seek healing will find salvation and liberation in the arms of Jesus, for his unconditional love accepts everyone -- regardless of their race or ethnicity.

Or does it? Matthew 15:21-28 recounts the story of a Canaanite woman who came to Jesus desperately seeking a healing for her daughter.

The Canaanites during Jesus' time were seen by Jews as being a mixed race of inferior people, much in the same way that some Euro-Americans view Hispanics today, specifically the undocumented. The Canaanites of old -- like Latino/as of our time -- did not belong. They were no better than "dogs."

For this reason Jesus' response to the Canaanite woman is troublesome. When she appealed to Jesus to heal her sick child, our Lord responded by saying: "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. It is not good to take the bread of the children and throw it to the dogs."

No matter how much I try to redeem the text, I cannot ignore the fact that Jesus called this woman of color a dog! I am forced to ask the uncomfortable question: Was Jesus a racist?

If you have a chance, read the entire article. De La Torre makes some excellent points. If you have the stomach, read some of the knuckle dragging comments. They're passing around $10 words like a big bowl of cheetos.

The reason is bizarre: administrators at the school have harrassed and violated the civil rights of a young woman named Brandi Blackbear because - and I'm a bit ashamed to admit this can go on in my country - they accused her of witchcraft. They say she used a magic spell to make one of her teachers sick. In retaliation, she has been subjected to searches and public humiliation, and the school has banned the wearing of non-Christian paraphernalia.

Tueday's headlines announced 60,000 jobs lost in a SINGLE day. 60,000 people out of work. That number also represents all who depend on them - the husbands and wives, sons and daughters, and aging parents.

The numbers are fed to us in an aseptic fashion, as raw numbers, curiosities. We still have no collective consciousness of what these numbers represent - people who may not be able to pay for their rent or mortgage, their utilities, their groceries.

How did the Republicans - who got us all into this mess - respond? Not a one voted for Obama's stimulus package, even after he stripped out infrastructure projects and contraceptives (let them eat children) and added tax cuts.

Tax cuts are for people who pay taxes. If you don't have an income you're not taxed. Anyone who has an income is hanging onto every penny against the possibility that their income disappears.

While Americans starve the Republicans congratulate themselves with a "we showed them" camaraderie.

Put white people on the endangered species list. Just like the (more photogenic) polar bear we white people are in danger of vanishing. So claims Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council in an article titled
Stimulus: Promoting Birth Control, Not Self-Control. Tony warns us ominously of a coming "demographic winter." But he's not really worried about all the pretty little babies. See if you can pick out his real plans.

Although America's birth rate isn't plunging like that of European countries, it has slowed. The reason we don't find ourselves in a "demographic winter" is largely because of the fertility rates of our immigrants, many of whom come from cultures that value life. Overall, the U.S. is hovering at its replacement level, which is hardly enough to finance the Baby Boomers' retirement.

Yeah! Perkins wants us to have lots of kids to shore up our ailing retirement system. But what Tony is suggesting is a ponzi scheme, where the people who got there first, the baby boomers, take money from the people who got there later. What about this vast crowd of new children that support us? They'll just have to have lots more children to support them, and on and on.

We need to overhaul the way we live and address poverty in all age groups head on. It has more to do with rich siphoning money out of the system than it does in a dearth of children. But it sounds nicer to blame it on the poor. When you blame it on the rich, you're dangerously close to talking class warfare.

My Garage Social

Yesterday, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday and Tuesday's inauguration, I held my first Garage Social. It's like a garage sale, but you don't have to sell anything - I didn't. I set up a coffee table and chairs, in the space in front of my garage, and met my neighbors. I served Meyers Dark Rum brownies and Meyer lemon squares, which were both a big hit. I had extra lemons, so let the neighbors take those, too.

One of my neighbors went home to get dog biscuits for the passers by with pooches, of which there were many. It was fun. We all got to know each other better. I gathered everyone's email addresses so I can let them know when we have another one, maybe the second Sunday of each month.

I like the idea of a day of service, but wanted something more personal than the things I found offered online at Change.gov. I didn't take any pictures this time, because I didn't want to distract from just meeting people.

There are so many directions in which the Garage Social could evolve. To me it seems there are few things in our current culture as subversive as walking up to a stranger, smiling, and introducing yourself.

We get it. Tony Perkins of the Family Research Council doesn't like Eric Holder. He said as much in his oh so cleverly titled post To Have and to Holder. But to do so he had to butcher a quote from an unnamed source (Junior Scholastic?) to associate Holder with corruption.

During his stint in the Clinton administration, Holder issued a series of questionable pardons, testified in support of "hate crimes," tried to restrict the Second Amendment, and couldn't shake what one magazine called "a record as a lackluster local U.S. attorney, [in which he] sat on ...corruption."

So Perkins is saying Holder "sat on... corruption"? Is that so wrong? Maybe he was trying to keep it down by sitting on it. Oh, if we only had the real quote.

Christian Gary Cass Tips His Racist Hand

Rev. Dr. (Theology) Gary Cass is vexed that President elect Obama has chosen openly gay Episcopal bishop Gene Robinson (pictured left) to offer a prayer at his inaugeration. Cass is warning, Don't let your children watch!

Now, I have to admit that I got my panties in a twist when I heard that openly homo-hating Pastor Rick Warren, author of the bestselling Purpose Driven Life, was slated by Obama to offer the inaugural invocation. But Obama is a smart guy and it was pointed out to me by cooler heads that by accepting Obama's invitation Warren and his hateful ideas were exposed to the full light of day. Warren, knowing exactly what side his bread is buttered on, HAS backed down somewhat, removing from his website a statement disallowing gays from membership in his church. Warren has even praised Obama's decision to include Robinson in the inauguration - an act that is pure garlic to the true Christians Rev. Dr. Gary Cass represents.

Robinson did not have to compromise his perverted principles to get invited, but Warren felt compelled to issue a statement praising Obama for selecting Robinson.

Robinson does not have a lucrative franchise with the U.S. Government, as does Warren, so could maintain his integrity. According to Warren's website,

In an I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I? tone, Rev. Dr. Gary Cass calls Obama's inaugeration The Flamboyant Homosexual Inaugural, and suggests Obama should be called the President of Sodomy & Compromise.

Cass cynically patterns his organization after the ALD, the Anti-Defamation League, which seeks "to stop the defamation of the Jewish people... to secure justice and fair treatment to all." Unfortunately the name Christian Anti-Defamation LEAGUE was already taken by Cass's mentor and Christian Anti-Defamation COMMISSION co-founder William S. Hollis.

Though from the San Diego, CA area, Cass cut his teeth with Dr. D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, near Miami. I mention this because I believe that white Christian ministries such as the CADC have their roots in the White Citizens' Councils of the South, which were a sort of "thinking man's" Ku Klux Klan. Remember, it was not only the blacks that were the targets of these groups. They also rallied against other people of color, Jews, Catholics, organized labor and anyone who sympathized with any of these, which included many whites. Bayard Rustin wrote in "New South...Old Politics," in 1956,

The forces behind the Councils have thrived by keeping white workers poor and Negro workers poorer, and, as in the past, their prime device against any strong union of laborers is to fan the flames of religious and racial intolerance.

Organizations like the CADC are careful to not appear overtly racist, limiting their strongest disapprobation for women and gays and those who love them. But they cannot help but tip their hand, as noted in the end of Cass's post,

Obama ought to have a stripper lead off the inaugural parade followed by the Hell's Angel's (sic) Motorcycle Drill Team followed by the Crips Precision Handgun Corp. and the Transvestite Fashion Police.

Rev. Dr. Gary Cass caters to the worst stereotypes: women are strippers, blacks are criminals, and gays are only concerned with fashion.

Oh, and BTW, Rev. Dr. Gary Cass would still like you rent his home.

Sin | New and Improved!

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia there exists a panoply of sin. First, of course, there is original sin, which you inherit from Adam and Eve. Bad baby, bad!

Then there are sins of commission and omission, with the excuses "I didn't do it," and "I didn't do anything," respectively.

Sins are also divided in terms of malice: sins of ignorance, passion or infirmity, and malice, and then again according to sins of thought, word, or deed.

Finally, sins are categorized according to their gravity, and until now these were mortal and venial sins. One or both of these leave a stain on the soul that needs to be removed by penance. (Sorry, my eyes are starting to glaze over, sorting out this stuff.)

The seven deadly sin, or capital vices, according to Saint Thomas, are those that incite desire and provide a pleasurable, though limited, result. These are greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger, sloth, and vanity.

As if this were not all confusing enough, the Pope has come up with one more category of sin - Ultimate Sin, a platinum line, if you will.

Betcha can't guess the first one. Yep!

Help Thou Mine Unbelief

Sometimes I think I'm not a very good atheist, and then something will happen that solidifies the ground under my feet. (A spiritual person would probably describe that as having their faith shaken.)

The other morning I was lying abed, clinging to the warmth of the blankets while trolling through commercial free movie channels. I found the movie Resurrection, starring Ellen Burstyn and Sam Shepard. It was released in 1980, when I was but a blushing 24 years old.

Ellen Burstyn played a faith healer, the real deal, with no particular spiritual affiliation. In fact, her boyfriend, played by Sam Shepard, demanded that she claim Christ as the source of her healing powers and she refused. Conflict.

It's actually a very bad movie, shot in a movie-of-the-week style, with a saccharine script, and overly sentimental - puppies, and kids with cancer on their last trip to Disneyland, that kind of thing.

But at the time I LOVED this movie and the only explanation at which I could arrive is that, at that time, I really wanted to believe. Sometimes I still do, but I can find no sustainable evidence to believe in the supernatural.

Now I'm bordering on NOT wanting to believe because supernatural interference in the physical world would create untenable chaos. If the laws of physics were bent based on prayer or other worldly intervention what would be the motive to love, to work, to cherish, to care? If we could not predict outcomes based on our behaviors and the behavior of the physical world we would become paralyzed.

It happened with Bush and Cheney: creating, living in, and imposing an alternate reality that had little to do with truth. Look how that paralyzed the world, and the damage that has done. We're just a few days away from a chance to live in truth. Why would I pray for anything else?

White Night Riots

Yesterday my 13-year-old son and I went to see the movie Milk, about assassinated San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk.

I moved to San Francisco from Boise, Idaho on October 11, 1978. I'd been run out of Reno the night before for dancing with a girl. I'm not gay, but where I came from in Idaho you could dance with anyone you wanted.

I'd been in San Francisco a little over a month when Harvey Milk was killed. I was 21 and was waiting in line at a bank in Noe Valley when a woman rushed in and cried, They've killed the mayor!

Everyone gasped. No one knew what was going on. It hadn't been a week since all those people had been killed in Guyana. Many, if not most, of the dead were from San Francisco. It felt like the world was coming apart.

The movie was a disappointment. There was so little rage expressed. Just before the credit roll there was text mentioning the White Night riot, as if it was a single event. It went on for three nights, and it was not at all like the peaceful candlelight vigil that ends the movie. I remember rows of burning police cars.

I've been reading about the Ludlow Massacre, the Watts riots, and the L.A. riots, and am beginning to see these events, and all the others like them, not as isolated incidents constrained to ghettos of individualized peoples - mine workers, Chicanos, blacks, women, gays - but as an expression of Americans fighting for their lives, which IS fighting for democracy.

It's hard to find a toehold in this stream of history. There are so many people who need help. Where do you go? What do you do? I do what I can, but it seems so little. After eight years of political languish I need much, much more.

Baptist Writer Hectors Church

Erin Roach writes for several Baptist publications. She was miffed about a Christmas Eve service that paraded across the stage "...a gingerbread man, a toy soldier, Frosty the Snowman, the Christmas Mouse and a candy cane." Even though they were used as an object lesson that Christmas is supposed to be about Jesus, she was unsatisfied.

As Christians, I know part of our calling is to push back the culture. It's not to open the door and welcome Frosty and his secular Christmas buddies onto the stage for our Christmas Eve service. I don't have much against such characters as long as we see them in their proper secular perspective, but I sure don't want to see them in place of Jesus at church.

Great! I agree. Keep Jesus and your nativity scenes and prayers in the church where they belong, and all the secular characters in public. Otherwise, StFU! It's not a one-way street.

While researching Ms. Roach I found this crass example of what she considers a creative and proper Baptist response to culture - a mass baptism and tailgate party in their church parking lot.

People brought their RVs and set up tents. There were televisions going with people watching football games before the baptism service started. People brought grills and they were making food for themselves and sharing with others. It was pretty fun.

Christ-centered entertainment - gotta love that.
