Love and Support Gays and You Are Now Homosexual

[Open in new window to see full size.]

In an American Family Assocation Action Alert sent by Donald Wildmon of Tupelo, Mississippi, earlier this week PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) was labeled a homosexual group. I found this particularly interesting as probably only a small percentage of people belonging to PFLAG are homosexual. Donald Wildmon doesn't just condemn gay people but also those who love or support them. Just as in the Civil Rights era, it was not just blacks who were targeted for retribution, but also those who supported them. The colors may have changed somewhat, but the game remains the same. Go Mississippi!

Of course they have their own ripped off version of PFLAG called PFOX (Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays). Wildmon tortures the logic,
By issuing national press releases against PFOX, by organizing protests at ex-gay conferences, by publishing anti-ex-gay literature, and by opposing ex-gays equal access to public venues, Pepsi-supported Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) contributes to the intolerance of the ex-gay community, stereotypes former homosexuals, and continually misrepresents PFOX's mission.
Anti-ex-gay literature?

Lest you think the ex-gay movement harmless consider the work that Exodus is doing in Uganda. Joe.My.God. reports that
American members of the "ex-gay" group Exodus are touring Uganda to support the government's crackdown on LGBT citizens. Exodus members have endorsed the proposed life sentence for gay sex in Uganda.
Check the Box Turtle Bulletin below for the full story.

In a region where genocide has occurred based on perceived differences among the population, this fomenting of intolerence is inexcusable and borders on criminal.

Does Satan Exist - The Nightline Face-Off

Two years ago when Nightline staged a debate on the questions "Does God Exist?" 15,000 comments were posted to their Web site. In an effort to reprise this success they will now stage a debate on the existence of Satan. The show is scheduled for March 26.

On the NO side of the argument will be famous philosopher Deepak Chopra and Bishop Carlton Pearson who wrote some books or something. YES will be represented by Annie Lobért, a Hooker for Jesus, and self-described "indy rock star," aka "Pastor Dude" Mark Driscoll, the founder of Mars Hills Church where the debate will take place.

Poor Satan.

The River Nile - An Unread Book Report

nicu

The River Nile, by Kenny Blair is an pro-life mystery. The protagonist, Kansas writer Julie Benham, researches the Catholic orphanage from which she was adopted - which, coincidentally, is next door to an abortion clinic, and "her perfect world soon begins to unravel."

I really don't mind reading books that use clichés like "her perfect world soon begins to unravel." I'm a big Ed Wood fan and often read advance copies of Christian books enjoying their purple prose. I did not get an advance copy of this book, however, and refuse to pay $11.89 for a book I'll probably toss, so will have to limit my review to the publicity copy.
As the young woman digs for information, she realizes that the women's clinic [in Wichita, KS] is just a front for what really happens when mothers come to abort their third trimester babies. Mothers checking in are unaware that the clinic refuses to kill their babies, but instead removes their children alive and then transfers them to the Catholic orphanage that cares for and raises them.
In the USA preterm infants are born 28 - 56 days early. It costs an average of $2,000 a day to care for a preterm infant, which would make the average total cost of caring for these infants $56,000 - $112,000. The abortion clinic/neonatal intensive care unit would have to be quite flush with funds and would also have to arrange for birth certificates. Only the most desperate adoptive parents would agree to an adoption where the biological parents have not given up their parental rights.

The Amazon product description poses the question, "When is it okay to deceive those around you if it means saving lives?"

Hmm., what part of "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour" do you not understand?

Mega Churches in Trouble

megachurch

Churches, sheltered through tax exemptions from the vagaries of free market capitalism, are finally feeling the financial pinch. Congregrants, faced with the choices of paying for rent and groceries or Pastor Kingpin's Bentley are trending toward the former.

OneNewsNow.com reports,
Companies that specialize in church mortgages report that foreclosures and delinquencies for congregations are on the rise as the tough economic times start to make their impact at the offering plate.
Seabreeze Church in Huntington, California, is struggling to make ends meet after committing to $12 million on a new complex. Gimmicks to attract new members and new money include EasterFest with hot air balloon rides, skate demos and rock walls for the kids.

Perhaps the church's financial problems are due to turning their finances over to a wizard.
This wizard gives you the ability to make a secure online contribution to your organization via a direct debit from your bank account or via credit card.
Or perhaps their problems are due to spending money they didn't have on a cushy building instead of following Jesus' commandments to feed and clothe the people.

Ghandi on Marriage Rights

ghandi march
Ghandis protesters marching in South Africa in 1913

I've been reading about Ghandi lately and thinking about non-violence. Yesterday I learned that in 1913, in an effort to expel Indians from South Africa, the government invalidated Indian marriages, making Indian wives concubines and Indian children bastards. Ghandi wrote:
...Mr. Justice Searle of the Cape Supreme Court gave judgment on March 14, 1913 to the effect that all marriages were outside the pale of legal marriages in South Africa with the exception of such as were celebrated according to Christian rites and registered by the Registrar of Marriages.
Indian women protested first, by crossing borders without papers and selling wares without licences. When they were imprisoned thousands of Indian miners went on strike and joined the march.

How different is it today, when the state, motivated by delusions of purity, tries to prevent women from marrying the women they love, and men from marrying the men that they love? By doing so marriage is made - not the sacred love-based union of two hearts - but a cynical tool of the state wielded against those of whom they disapprove.

Can we move beyond the thinking that motivated South Africa in 1913?

From the People Who Brought You Pope Sweat

The makers of Pope Pius IX, The Pope's Cologne, is premiering their new fragrance, L'Innocence, based on a saccharine painting of the Virgin, the Child, and a lamb by William Adolph Bouguereau. Doctor Frederick Hass, the creator of this fragrance, describes it as,
soft and ethereal with a gentle opening ripple of cool lavender in the morning and evolving into a lingering, soft, powdery undertone of freshly-ironed linen at bedtime. It has, at once, a soothing, almost narcotic yet exalting quality seldom found in other fragrances.
Really, I think I'd prefer a cologne based on this other painting of Bouguereau's. It's more, shall we say, priestly.

Man Protests Christianity Naked

naked man on crossA man protesting Christianity climbed atop a cross on the West Central Presbyterian Church in Los Angeles Sunday. Traffic was blocked on La Brea Avenue between Wilshire and Olympic until the man was talked down around 3:00pm. Church services were suspended. The man was placed under a 72-hour psychiatric hold.

Yes, that's what the brown stuff on the cross is.

Kind of calls to mind Luis Bunuel's Simon of the Desert

Go ahead, punk, make my Dei!

saint gabriel possentiIn case you are wondering what to ponder, to what high ideals to afix your thoughts, during this Lenten season (I know I am!), consider Saint Gabriel Possenti, the patron saint of handguns. According to reports Possenti, a Catholic seminarian, saved the village of Isola, Italy from bandits by shooting a lizard. It was obvious to the bandits that Possenti meant business. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920.

John Snyder, the founder and chairman of the Saint Gabriel Possenti Society writes,
From the life of St. Gabriel Possenti, we observe that holiness and righteous force with the use of handguns can and do coincide. St. Gabriel Possenti used his handgun marksmanship in the rescue of an entire village without causing physical harm to a single human being. Hopefully, people of various faiths, including prelates of the Catholic Church and leaders of other denominations, will take this lesson to heart and even meditate on [Possenti's example] during this Lenten season.
As one touched by gun violence, let me remind that Gun violence in the United States is associated with the majority of homicides and over half the suicides.
